He explained the problem of such jurisdictions refusing to turn illegal alien convicts over to federal law enforcement.

Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, stated that his panel would mark up legislation in the near future to counter the policies of sanctuary cities. Such jurisdictions have determined not to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and attempt to restrict its operations.

“We’re looking at passing a bill to deal with this sanctuary jurisdiction issue,” Chair Jordan said in an interview. “We think we’re going to have a markup in two weeks in our committee to address this. That may be, well, you know, there’s various ways to look at it.”

Representative Jordan explained the issue with sanctuary jurisdictions, stating, “They got a guy in their jail. ICE knows it’s an illegal migrant who’s also been charged with some other crime, they get a notice saying it’s a detainer notice saying, ‘Hey, if you’re going to let this guy out, just give us a heads-up. Give us 48 hours. We’ll come and arrest him there at the jail.’ Instead, they release him to the streets.“

He added, “That’s a problem there. We should work at some way in our federal law that you can’t do that. You have to work with federal law enforcement, when you have that scenario.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chairman Jordan and members of the House Judiciary Committee as they seek to counter sanctuary jurisdiction policies.
  • For discernment for members of the House and Senate as they craft legislation to uphold law and order.
